But it\u2019s possible to experience spring fatigue too.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #21738a; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>The Biggest Problem Isn\u2019t the Calendar \u2013 It\u2019s the Clock.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Daylight Saving Time is the biggest culprit in causing spring fatigue. While most of us adjust within a day or two, <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/research\/sleep-surveys\/survey-daylight-saving-time-may-contribute-to-sleep-loss\/\">others struggle longer.<\/a> According to a study in the <em>Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine<\/em>, adolescents remained tired throughout the entire week following Daylight Saving Time, and their reaction times were slower. Also, a study published in the journal <em>Epidemiology<\/em> found that car crashes in New Zealand went up 16% the first day after and 12% the second day after the switch to Daylight Saving Time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #21738a; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Other Sleep Saboteurs of Spring<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Daylight Saving Time isn\u2019t the only factor that can cause a spring slowdown in your routine. Here are some other reasons you might feel a bit sleepy when spring hits, and what you can do about them:<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #21738a; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Sleep Better with Springtime Sniffles<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/allergies-and-sleep\/\">Allergies<\/a> are common during the springtime and can prevent you from reaching the deeper, most restorative phases of sleep when you are suffering from their effects. Even if you don\u2019t have allergy problems yourself, your partner might \u2013 and their sneezing and sniffling could keep you up at night.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Start by washing your bedding regularly, plus clean or change your air filter frequently to help manage your allergies. If your allergies are causing you to snore and you\u2019re waking up your partner, consider investing in <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/research\/sleep-surveys\/relationships-sleep\/\">nasal sprays or strips<\/a> to help you breathe more easily. Keep in mind that snoring can be part of a more serious health issue, so be sure to talk to your doctor first.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #21738a;\">Darkness Is Your Friend<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You\u2019ll probably want to open your windows to enjoy the fresh spring breezes, but external noise like chirping birds or frustrated, honking commuters can interrupt your sleep.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A cool, dark and quiet room makes the best <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/better-sleep\/how-to-sleep-better\/\">healthy sleep environment<\/a>. If outside noise is stopping you from getting enough shut-eye, consider using earplugs or listen to sounds that can actually help you fall asleep, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/types-of-sleep-aids\/\">pink or white noise<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #21738a; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Don\u2019t Make Exercise Your Enemy<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Trying to fit more into your day just because it\u2019s still light outside can also wreak havoc on your sleep. It\u2019s no surprise that the extra daylight hours make us feel optimistic about what we can accomplish. For example, you might go to the gym later than usual and for a longer period of time. This isn\u2019t a good plan, since doing high-intensity activities too close to bedtime can affect the <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/sleep-athletic-performance\/\">time it takes you to fall asleep<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Try to keep your daily routine as consistent as possible, year-round, for the sake of your sleep. Consider completing your exercise at least <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/better-sleep\/top-15-better-sleep-tips\/\">2 hours before bedtime<\/a> so your body has enough time to rest too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #21738a; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Check with Your Doctor about Sleep Disorders<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression related to the change in seasons, isn\u2019t just a winter condition. Although less common, some people suffer from spring and summer SAD. Symptoms of this include insomnia, poor appetite, weight loss, agitation or anxiety.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you experience these symptoms for days at a time, see your doctor. You may have an underlying sleep condition that needs to be addressed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #21738a; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>A Final Solution \u2013 Give Your Bedroom a Refresh<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>While you\u2019re following these tips to set yourself up for higher-quality sleep this spring, it can\u2019t hurt to <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/spring-clean-your-bedroom\/\">give your bedroom a good spring cleaning<\/a> too. After all, we do spend one-third of our lives in bed.
