What makes this season so enjoyable \u2013 warm temps and more daylight \u2013 can have a downside: It can keep you from sleeping well. Bonus: You\u2019ll feel more energized to tackle that summer bucket list. Now, who\u2019s ready for summertime zzz\u2019s?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Some Don\u2019t Like It Hot<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Why is it so much harder to sleep when it\u2019s a little warmer than normal (or a lot warmer)? Your body is hardwired to slide into sleep when it\u2019s cooler. In fact, as part of your body\u2019s pattern of wakefulness and sleep, called your circadian rhythm, <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/sleep-extras\/stages-of-sleep\/\">your internal temperature drops<\/a> slightly as bedtime draws near. This natural decrease in temperature signals your brain, \u201cIt\u2019s about time for bed, right?\u201d But dropping your internal temperature is more difficult if the atmospheric temperature high, and even harder if there\u2019s humidity in the mix too.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Sun<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just summer\u2019s higher temps that keep you restless, it\u2019s also the sunlight. Depending on where you live in the U.S., you\u2019ll be getting not just a few minutes, but a few more hours of sunny rays. All that daylight is great for spending time outside and making the most of your summer vacation. But it\u2019s harder to fall asleep when it\u2019s bright outside earlier in the morning and later in the evening. That\u2019s not to say you should mourn summertime \u2013 just the opposite \u2013 but you may have to follow a few strategies when it\u2019s sunny to get to sleep, and stay asleep.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Summer Sleep Suggestions<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The summer heat shouldn\u2019t be the reason why your quality sleep should sink to the bottom of the swimming pool. Here are some tips designed just for the season that can help you snooze more soundly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blind the sun.<\/strong> Opt for blackout curtains on all your bedroom windows (no more annoying sunlight at 5 a.m., plus your room will stay cooler day and night.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take a cold shower before bed.<\/strong> Help yourself out by taking a quick, cool shower before bedtime. Plus, it\u2019ll help you relax too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chill out your bedroom.<\/strong> Try to <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/better-sleep\/the-ideal-bedroom\/\">keep your bedroom at 65 degrees Fahrenheit<\/a>. Use a rotating fan to circulate the air in your bedroom. Also, consider investing in cooling bedroom products, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/mattress-education\/mattress-accessories\/pillow-types\/\">pillows<\/a>, sheets and even <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/mattress-education\/mattress-types\/\">mattresses<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pack on the ice.<\/strong> Keep a glass or water bottle filled with icy cool water next to your bed. Drink a little cold water before bed to lower your internal body temp.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go spread eagle<\/strong>. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/better-sleep\/sleep-positions\/\">sleep position<\/a> may be making you warmer. Always sleep curled up in a ball? Maybe it\u2019s time to try sleeping with your arms and legs spread out, which helps release your body heat, instead of retaining it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sleep solo<\/strong>. Nothing personal, but <a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/why-couples-sleep-apart\/\">your partner<\/a> may be adding to the higher bedroom temps too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get naked.<\/strong> Your pajamas may be trapping heat close to your body making it harder to sleep. Look for pajamas in light, breathable fabrics.
