From hormonal changes to added stress, several factors can impact women&#8217;s sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it possible that women need more sleep than men? We\u2019ve got three case studies that explore possible gender differences in sleep and how these differences can impact the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Do Women Need More Sleep Than Men?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several factors can contribute to why women struggle more than men as they try to get a good night\u2019s sleep. One of the most significant factors is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6932848\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal changes, particularly during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These hormonal changes can cause insomnia, night sweats, and hot flashes, resulting in sleep disturbances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to hormonal changes, women are also more likely to experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/jwh.2010.2371\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression and anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and often have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4164903\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added responsibilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like childcare and household duties. These factors can cause added stress and make it difficult for women to relax and unwind before bed, ultimately impacting sleep quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/how-much-sleep-do-i-need\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amount of sleep a person needs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can vary depending on factors such as age, lifestyle, and overall health. On average, it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about_sleep\/how_much_sleep.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended that both men and women get 7-9 hours of sleep per night<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to discussing sleep struggles, studies have shown that women are more likely than men to report sleep challenges. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aasm.org\/study-finds-that-sleep-disorders-affect-men-and-women-differently\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Sleep Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that women are 1.4 times more likely than men to report insomnia symptoms, and according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/research\/2021-state-of-americas-sleep-research\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better Sleep Council research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More women than men say they do not get enough sleep (54% vs. 42%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More women than men say it is very\/somewhat difficult to fall asleep (50% vs. 38%) and to stay asleep (55% vs. 43%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are also more likely than men to say that body pain or aches get in the way of them getting a good night\u2019s sleep (45% vs. 32%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer women than men say they are very satisfied with their sleep (15% vs. 23%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following case studies explore the differences between sleep in men and women, including how it\u2019s reported and possible reasons why women need more sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case Study #1<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4164903\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This 2013 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined gender differences in sleep time among individuals with similar work-family responsibilities. The study found that \u201coverall and at most life course stages, women slept more than men\u201d but that the gender gap was smaller when accounting for the impact of paid and unpaid work, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/workday-power-nap-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">napping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bedtimes, and sleep interruptions for caregiving. Women&#8217;s sleep time was more influenced by work and family responsibilities than men&#8217;s sleep time. However, interruptions for caregiving, which are more common among women, reduced sleep quality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case Study #2<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22003978\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loughborough University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sleep Research Center found women need \u201cabout 20 more minutes of sleep per night\u201d than men. Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22401983\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim Horne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted that &#8220;women&#8217;s brains are wired differently\u2026so their sleep need will be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/is-there-such-thing-as-too-much-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slightly greater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger\u2026In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case Study #3<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4089020\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2014 research review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighted the role of sex differences in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/while-inadequate-rest-may-increase-the-risk-of-cancer-restorative-sleep-is-an-essential-part-of-its-treatment-and-recovery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggesting that gender differences in sleep disorders among women are lacking research and showing potential gender biases. They found that women\u2019s risk of experiencing insomnia is 40% higher than men\u2019s. Women also have a higher risk of developing restless leg syndrome (RLS) and sleep apnea, both of which can impact sleep quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research also notes that differences in sleep behavior and disorders may not only be driven by biological factors but also by gender differences in symptom reporting. Identifying these differences in men and women has the potential to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sleep disorders and related conditions for all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting enough quality sleep is essential for both physical and mental health, regardless of sex or gender.
