That doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019re sleeping well together and getting quality sleep:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% say they get better sleep alone, and 45% say they sleep better with someone else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most of those in a relationship and living with their partner say they get a better night\u2019s sleep with a partner, one-quarter say they sleep better alone.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make discussing sleep preferences and habits with your partner a priority. Open communication is good for your relationship as it builds trust, which can promote understanding, problem-solving, and compromise. You certainly don\u2019t want to find out months\u2014or years\u2014into your relationship that they\u2019ve been silently suffering from poor sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s not uncommon for partners to decide to move to separate beds if it improves sleep compatibility. A recent<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1xIFjK1x2aDmre_eGpJtMct77W37l7_U76D86Nsz0H54\/edit?tab=t.0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey by the Sleep Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that almost 53% of U.S. adults have started sleeping separately from their partner and say that it has improved their sleep quality. Sometimes referred to as a \u201csleep divorce,\u201d the change can lead to longer sleep duration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest assured that a sleep divorce won\u2019t necessarily become permanent. Over 25% of couples who tried sleeping apart started sharing the bed again, primarily because they missed being together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a Bedtime Routine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to promote good sleep as a couple is to design a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/reimagine-your-nighttime-routine\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nighttime routine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/research\/2021-state-of-americas-sleep-research\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">81% of adults in a BSC survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said they have regular evening habits before bedtime. Your bedtime routine should follow a predictable pattern that signals your body that it\u2019s time to get ready to go to bed. A few suggestions to get you started include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating a light snack<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a cup of tea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing a board or card game<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercising lightly or stretching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning off<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bettersleep.org\/blog\/the-negative-effects-of-using-led-and-blue-lights-at-night\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devices\/blue lights<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing self-care, such as brushing your teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve made it to the bedroom, you can read a book, listen to music, write in a journal, or practice mindfulness techniques like meditation or relaxing breathing. Of course, cuddling, massages, kissing, and having sex are more intimate activities for the bedroom. Be sure you enjoy the activities that you do together\u2014and respect each other\u2019s space.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep Peacefully with a Partner<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quality sleep is essential to our physical and mental health and overall well-being. Good sleep puts us in a better mood for the day ahead and strengthens our relationships with those around us\u2014including our partners. It\u2019s never too late to start a sleep journey!
